Container Volumes Expected to Dip Caused By Tariffs
With the rollout of new tariffs, there’s of course been impacts in the supply chain. Specifically, in regards to the impact tariffs have on container volumes. Blank sailings have been on the rise from ocean carriers and shippers have been grappling with a variety of decisions on whether or not continuing to bring goods over from countries that have had greater tariff increases.
Per data from Drewry, global container volume is expected to drop by 1% this year, per Drewry data, due to the ongoing tariff challenges. According to a Freightwaves article, that would represent about 1.8 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), based on the 183.2 million TEUs of global container traffic recorded in 2024, accounting for roughly 10% of the more than 10 million-TEU increase from 2023.
