Schedule reliability in the month of September has seen some improvement. Out on the transpacific lane, those services largely saw improved on-time performance that month. Additionally, many ocean carriers added more vessel space to the U.S. West Coast by loosening up capacity. While the U.S. East Coast has seen some reliability hit a slight dip, some speculation for that decline is the ongoing draft restrictions on the Panama Canal.
Global Schedule Reliability in September
For the entirety of September, total U.S. imports from Asia hit 1.5 million TEUs – which is up 1.4 percent from the same period last year, the JOC reports.
According to Sea-Intelligence Maritime Analysis’ recent data, weekly services from Asia to the U.S. West Coast have arrived on schedule 47.8 percent of the time in September. This number is notably up 44.6 percent from the month of August, and 32 percent from September of last year.
The graph on the left below shows global schedule reliability throughout the past few years. As you can see in that graph, schedule reliability from the end of 2020 to the middle of 2022 was quite low compared to previous years, as well as this year. Additionally, for the past few months of this year, global schedule reliability (for the most part), has stayed fairly steady, and less ebbs and flows as other years have shown.
The graph on the right below shows the global average delays for late vessel arrivals throughout the same time periods from the other graph. Not too much of a surprise looking at the graph and seeing 2021 and 2022 having higher average delays in comparison to other years.
When looking at the carrier side of things, Maersk and Hamburg Sud were the most reliable top-14 carriers, with reaching 71.3 percent schedule reliability in September. Followed closely behind by MSC with 69.8 percent.
