Market Update

Tariffs: No major updates have emerged on tariff adjustments—most countries remain subject to the standard 10% reciprocal rate. China, however, continues to face higher tariff levels.
One key change on the horizon: starting May 2, 2025, at 12:01 a.m. EDT, the de minimis exemption (for goods valued at $800 or less) will no longer apply to shipments from China and Hong Kong, per a recent Executive Order from the President.

Port volumes: In the first quarter of the year, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges took the lead in container volume, surpassing the long-dominant Port of Rotterdam. According to The Maritime Executive, Antwerp-Bruges saw a 4.6% increase in tonnage and a 4.5% rise in TEUs, handling a total of 3,436,000 TEUs. In contract, Rotterdam reported a more modest 2.2% growth, moving 3,364,000

Container Volumes Expected to Dip Caused By Tariffs

With the rollout of new tariffs, there’s of course been impacts in the supply chain. Specifically, in regards to the impact tariffs have on container volumes. Blank sailings have been on the rise from ocean carriers and shippers have been grappling with a variety of decisions on whether or not continuing to bring goods over from countries that have had greater tariff increases. Ā

Per data from Drewry, global container volume is expected to drop by 1% this year, per Drewry data, due to the ongoing tariff challenges. According to a Freightwaves article, that would represent about 1.8 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), based on the 183.2 million TEUs of global container traffic recorded in 2024, accounting for roughly 10% of the more than 10 million-TEU increase from 2023.

At some point during the shipping process cargo shifts around and inevitably shows up at your company door in ā€œheavily usedā€ condition.

There’s a very important factor to consider when palletizing cargo and that is knowing the type of pallet your goods are being loaded onto.Ā
