It’s the holiday season and with that comes a lot of fun holiday themed events taking place all over the world.

One fun holiday event that takes place in the United States and in Canada, is the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train – which first launched back in 1999 and has raised more than $21 million and received over 5 million pounds of food for food banks throughout North America, Canadian Pacific notes.

What is the CP Holiday Train?

The CP Holiday Train program goes on its live tour starting November 23rd and goes until December 18th. The first shows this year took place in Maine – Jackman, Brownville, Junction and Hermon.

The purpose of the Holiday Train is to raise money, food and awareness for local food banks in communities along the CP network.

“The Holiday Train is all about families and communities coming together to celebrate the season and to help those in need. We are excited to be back out on the rails in our communities, taking these two beautiful trains across our network and sharing the joy that comes with gathering in the spirit of giving,” CP’s President and Chief Executive Officer Keith Creel stated in a news release.

As the Holiday Train passes through many cities, nearly 170 live performances take place. Some of this year’s performers are Mackenzie Porter, Alan Doyle, and Tenille Townes. You can view the whole schedule here.

The CP Holiday Train program has two trains. One that travels exclusively in Canada and another that makes stops in both Canada and the U.S.

Additionally, each Holiday Train is approximately 1,000 feet long and has 14 rail cars, which are decorated with LED lights and various holiday designs.

So, what does a typical Holiday Train event look like?

First, the train arrives safely in front of the crowd, then the band on the train begins to play a song. After that, a short presentation begins with local food bank officials being brought on stage to be recognized.

When the presentation is over, the band continues with a variety of holiday themed songs. When the band is done, the boxcar door closes and the Holiday Train makes its way to its next stop, per the CP official website.

These Holiday Train events are free to attend but it is encouraged that if attendees are able to, to please bring a non-perishable food or cash donation.
